Ibedy's Art Cakes: You Would Know Her Work Anywhere

I have known Ibedy for about six or seven years now. And in that time I have watched her work show up at more events than I can count, always from behind my camera, always making my job easier without even trying.

But here is the thing I always tell people when her name comes up. Even if I had never met her, I would know her cakes. You can spot one from across the room. There is a signature to them, a level of detail and artistry that does not look like anyone else's work. It looks like hers. And if you had any doubt at all from just looking, the first bite would settle it completely.

That combination is rare. Beautiful cakes exist. Delicious cakes exist. Cakes that are both, made by someone who treats every single order as a piece of art she is putting her name on — that is something else entirely.

Conozco a Ibedy desde hace unos seis o siete años. Y en ese tiempo la he visto aparecer con su trabajo en más eventos de los que puedo contar, siempre desde detrás de mi cámara, siempre haciendo mi trabajo más fácil sin siquiera intentarlo.

Her Story

Ibedy's story is one of the things I respect most about her. She is Ibette Hernandez, a pastry chef based right here in Bryant, Arkansas, and she did not start this business with a plan. She started it out of necessity. She found herself at home caring for her children, one of them dealing with a serious illness that needed her full attention. She started making and selling simple cakes once or twice a month just to be productive with her time. Then one day a customer asked for something custom. She took the challenge. And what she found when she sat down to do it was a talent she did not know she had.

She describes it as a gift from God. I believe her.

She went from that one custom order to hundreds of them, studying the craft, refining her technique, building something real with the support of her family and the trust of her community. In 2016 she made it official and opened Ibedy's Art Cake LLC in Bryant. Nearly a decade later her work is unmistakable, her reputation is bulletproof, and every cake she makes still looks like she poured everything she had into it.

La historia de Ibedy es una de las cosas que más respeto de ella. Es Ibette Hernandez, una pastelera ubicada aquí mismo en Bryant, Arkansas, y no comenzó este negocio con un plan. Lo comenzó por necesidad. Se encontró en casa cuidando a sus hijos, uno de ellos lidiando con una enfermedad seria que requería toda su atención. As a photographer, I will tell you something directly. The cake matters. Not just because it tastes good, but because it lives in your photos forever. The detail on a wedding cake, the design on a quinceañera cake — those things show up in images and they either add to the story or they do not. Every time I have photographed an event with one of Ibedy's cakes on that table, it has added to the story. Every time without exception.

Como fotógrafo, te voy a decir algo directamente. El pastel importa. No solo porque sabe bien, sino porque vive en tus fotos para siempre. El detalle en un pastel de boda, el diseño en un pastel de quinceañera — esas cosas aparecen en las imágenes y ya sea que suman a la historia o no.
