Camera sensors are extraordinarily sensitive to concentrated light. That is what makes them so good at capturing detail in dark rooms, at night, under stage lighting. But that same sensitivity makes them completely defenseless against a laser. I have heard from photographers who lost a camera to a DJ laser at an event. That is a five thousand dollar mistake that the photographer absorbs completely because there is no one else to bill and nothing to do but replace the equipment and keep moving.
So when I put my camera down and step back during a laser segment, that is not attitude. That is me protecting the equipment I need to finish documenting your event.

Save the Lasers for El Baile
During the open dancing portion of the event, lasers are completely fine. By that point the key moments are already captured. The waltz, the coronation, the shoe change, the surprise dances — all of it is done. When the dance floor opens, that is the perfect window. And instead of shooting against the lasers, I can work with them. Laser light on a packed dance floor? That is a stunning photograph. I want those shots.

A Note to DJs
I have deep respect for what a great DJ brings to an event. A skilled DJ is the reason the dance floor stays packed and the energy never drops. We are on the same team.
The ask is simple. Coordinate with the photographer before the event. Know when the formal program ends and the open dance begins. Save the lasers for that moment. That conversation takes two minutes and it protects thousands of dollars in equipment while making sure the photos and video are everything they should be.
