En una esquina cálida de North Little Rock, Arkansas, florece una pequeña joya con un corazón enorme: Almitas, una nevería y snack bar que no solo endulza paladares, sino también toca corazones. Su fundadora, Alma, originaria de Veracruz, México, ha construido con esfuerzo y amor un espacio que ya es parte esencial de la comunidad local.
“Mi gente fue quien me inspiró”, cuenta Alma, mientras el aroma de esquites y chilindrinas invade el aire. Lo que comenzó como un negocio casero —donde vendía nieves artesanales desde su sala— creció hasta convertirse en un vibrante punto de encuentro, gracias al apoyo incondicional de sus clientes, muchos de los cuales viajaban desde lejos solo para probar sus creaciones.
Pero Almitas no es solo una nevería. Es un reflejo de la versatilidad de Alma, quien también maneja un equipo de limpieza y un negocio de banquetes llamado “Banquetes Almitas”. El nombre, que lleva desde joven como apodo, se ha convertido en una marca con identidad propia. “Almita, Almita”, así la conocía todo el mundo desde sus primeros años en Estados Unidos, y ese cariño se tradujo en confianza cuando decidió abrir su local.
Los productos más populares en Almitas —esquites, nieves artesanales, salsas caseras de sabores como tamarindo, mango y blueberry— son prueba del talento culinario de Alma y su equipo. “Aquí no se compra salsa, aquí se hace”, recalca con orgullo, mostrando la dedicación con la que elabora cada receta.
Lo que más emociona a Alma es la respuesta de la comunidad. “Yo pensé que solo los hispanos vendrían, pero también vinieron americanos, centroamericanos... nos han recibido con los brazos abiertos”, dice con los ojos brillosos. Este apoyo ha sido tan grande que, apenas un año después de abrir, ya planea una segunda locación.
Entre risas y anécdotas, Alma confiesa que el camino no ha sido fácil. Trabajó incansablemente durante 25 años, combinando jornadas largas con la preparación nocturna de tamales y hielitos. “Me he roto el lomo en mil pedazos”, dice, mientras habla con gratitud de sus hijas, en especial de Frida, su “mano derecha”, y de su esposo, quien ahora la apoya en cada paso.
“En cinco años no sé hasta dónde lleguemos, pero mi meta es seguir creciendo sin perder lo que somos: nuestras recetas, nuestra decoración, nuestro nombre”, afirma. Quizás algún día Almitas se convierta en franquicia, pero lo más importante para Alma es no perder el alma del proyecto: el amor por su comunidad.
Agradece a sus hijas, a su familia, a sus trabajadoras, y sobre todo, a sus clientes. “Por ustedes somos lo que somos”, dice. Almitas no es solo un negocio, es un sueño compartido, una historia de perseverancia, sabor y mucho corazón.

His family's chain of restaurants, Las Palmas, pays tribute to their California roots and provides a strong sense of community.
While deeply involved in the family business, Luis discovered his true passion for art during his teenage years. Today, he is celebrated as a distinguished mixed-media artist, with his work vividly showcasing Latino heritage. His dynamic pieces frequently grace festivals across Central Arkansas, captivating audiences with their rich cultural narratives and artistic innovation.
Luis is also known for his engaging live painting shows, where he brings his artistic process to life in real-time. His daughter plays a special role in these events, assisting him and learning the art of painting firsthand. Luis takes great joy in sharing his craft with her, hoping to pass down not just his techniques but also his deep love for art.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Luis is a dedicated family man. He actively coaches his children’s soccer teams and serves as a lead coach in the local league. His commitment extends to his role at 10 Fitness, where he helps community members achieve their fitness goals. Despite his busy life, Luis’s unwavering dedication to his family, fitness, and art reflects his belief in hard work and perseverance. His art, enriched by his experiences and personal values, stands as a testament to his vibrant spirit and relentless drive.

LR Boys is a team dedicated to making quinceañeras unforgettable with their exceptional dance performances and presentations. Founded by Daniel Mendez, also known as "El Niño," in 2022, the group discovered their potential early on and made their debut at a quinceañera on November 18th, 2022. Daniel, a proud Oaxacan, brings his rich cultural heritage into every performance, incorporating traditional Mexican dances that add an authentic and vibrant touch to each event.
Since their debut, LR Boys has covered numerous events, leaving families with cherished memories through their captivating performances and unwavering professionalism. You can often find them rehearsing at Plaza Frida or performing at the next quinceañera in Little Rock. Committed to inspiring the next generation of dancers, they frequently participate in events at pro bono rates, demonstrating that with perseverance, all dreams can be achieved.
