Planning a Christian Quinceañera?
Quinceañera Planning Guide
How to Plan a Christian Quinceañera: Faith, Tradition, and Making It a Day to Remember
I grew up in an evangelical Christian church. So when a family comes to me planning a Christian quinceañera, I am not just the photographer — I actually understand what this day is supposed to mean and why it matters so much to get it right.
I know the difference between a ceremony that was built around genuine faith and one where the prayer was added at the beginning to check a box. And after years of photographing these events, I can tell you that the families who build the day around something real walk away with memories that the ones who did not never quite reach.
This is what I would tell any parent planning a Christian quinceañera — from someone who has been in the church and been behind the camera.
The Foundation
The Ceremony Is Not the Formality. It Is the Point.
I have photographed quinceañeras where the religious portion was three minutes and felt like a checkbox. I have photographed ones where a pastor spoke over a family and half the room was in tears before he was finished. Those two events do not produce the same photographs. Not even close.
If you are planning a Christian quinceañera, give the ceremony real space in the program. Let there be worship. Bring in a pastor or elder who actually knows your family and has something genuine to say over your daughter on this day. A scripture read with intention, a prayer that carries the weight of fifteen years of gratitude — these are the moments that give the rest of the day its meaning. And from behind my camera, I can always tell when a family got this part right. It shows in the room and it shows in every single photo.
The Waltz
Keep the Waltz. Every Time.
I hear families debate skipping the waltz sometimes. Too formal. Too old fashioned. Takes too long. I understand all of that and I still say keep it every single time.
The moment a father takes his daughter's hand for the waltz, the room changes. Everyone goes quiet without being asked to. And for however many minutes that song plays, you are watching a father and his little girl — who is not so little anymore — move across that floor together. I have photographed that moment hundreds of times and I have watched dads who held it together all day completely fall apart during those two minutes. That is not a moment you plan. That is a moment you protect by keeping it in the program. Practice it together. Make it meaningful. And do not cut it short. The same goes for the mother-daughter dance — it deserves its own moment and I will say more on that shortly.
The Surprise Dance
Let the Church Girls Come Out
One of the best surprise dances I have photographed was not a choreographed routine with a chambelán crew. It was her church friends coming out and just going for it.
These were the girls she had grown up worshipping with. The ones who knew her long before the quinceañera was ever being planned. When they came out, the reaction from the parents and the guests in that room was completely different from what a polished performance gets. Because what they were watching was real. People who genuinely love your daughter, celebrating her the way only they can. If your family has that kind of community at your church, consider bringing them into the surprise dance. I promise you will not regret it when you see the photos.
The Fun Part
The Piñata, the Games, and Why I Love Photographing Both
Let me be direct about something. A Christian quinceañera is still a party. And a good party needs real fun in it — not just a formal program with a nice centerpiece on every table.
I have been at quinceañeras where a piñata came out and the energy in the room completely shifted. Kids, grandparents, everyone — suddenly on their feet. Musical chairs does the same thing. Two minutes into that game and you have a room full of people laughing together regardless of age, how well they know each other, or whether they speak the same language. As the photographer, the candid moments from those games are often the ones parents come back to most because they captured something real that nobody staged. So yes, plan the games. They are not beneath a Christian celebration. They are exactly in the spirit of one.
Keep the Energy Up
A Photo Booth, a DJ Who Gets It, and Someone on the Mic
Three things that separate a reception that flows from one that drags: a photo booth, a DJ who actually understands the room, and someone on the microphone who can hold an audience.
A photo booth gives your guests somewhere to be between the presentations, the food, and the dancing. It creates moments nobody planned and keeps the energy from falling flat when the program has a gap. I have seen a photo booth keep a reception alive while things were running an hour behind. Nobody noticed because they were busy laughing with people they had just met.
The MC is just as important. A great Master of Ceremonies keeps the program moving, keeps the audience engaged, and makes sure no moment lands without energy behind it. Your DJ and your MC need to be in sync from the start. When they are, the night feels effortless. When they are not, you feel it in the room and so does everyone else.
DJ Recommendation
For the music, I personally recommend DJ Enrique Aquino. I have worked events alongside him and the difference a skilled DJ makes to the energy of a room is something you simply cannot fake. He reads the crowd, knows how to build a moment, and understands that a Christian quinceañera has a different feel than a regular Saturday night. That awareness matters more than most families realize when they are booking. Reach out to him and tell him I sent you.
The Program
Keep Every Tradition in the Program
A Christian quinceañera does not mean a stripped-down quinceañera. The faith at the center of the day makes the traditions more meaningful, not less necessary. Do not remove them. Keep them all. Every one of these moments deserves its place in the program and I will tell you why from behind the camera.
La Coronación. The crowning is one of the most photographed moments of the entire day and for good reason. A crown placed on a young woman's head by the people who love her most is a powerful symbol — and in a Christian setting, it carries even more weight. She is being recognized not just as a young adult but as someone whose life is set apart for something greater.
El Cambio de Zapatillas. The change of shoes is one of those moments that makes every person in the room pay attention. The flat shoe comes off. The heel goes on. And in that single exchange, you can feel the room acknowledge that something has shifted. Fathers who do this for their daughters do not always make it through without tears. I have never seen one that did not land.
La Entrega de Cadena y Pulseras. The necklace and bracelet presentation is a moment of love made tangible. Someone in that girl's life chose a piece for her — something she will wear and remember. It photographs beautifully and it is one of the quieter, more intimate moments in a program full of big energy.
La Última Muñeca. The last doll is one of my favorites to photograph because of what it produces in the room. There is always a laugh, always a moment of recognition, and almost always a tear somewhere in the crowd. It is a goodbye to childhood handed to her by the people who watched her grow through it. Keep it.
El Regalo Sorpresa. The surprise gift builds anticipation in the room. By this point in the program, guests are warmed up and fully invested in her. A well-timed surprise — whether it is a piece of jewelry, a trip, a car, or something deeply personal — creates a reaction that is completely unscripted. Those are some of the best photographs of the night.
El Baile con Papá y el Baile con Mamá. I have already said everything I can say about the father-daughter waltz. But the mother-daughter dance deserves its own moment too and it does not always get one. The relationship between a quinceañera and her mother is the foundation of everything — the planning, the preparation, the years of showing up — and having a dedicated dance for the two of them is a chance to honor that on the floor in front of everyone. Do not let it get cut from the program. Both dances matter.
When all of these moments are in the program, the day has a complete arc. It has meaning from start to finish. And every single one of them gives me something worth pointing my camera at. Keep the program full.
A Christian quinceañera planned with real intention is one of the most beautiful events I get the privilege of photographing. Not because of the dress or the décor — though both matter — but because of what is happening underneath all of it. A family giving thanks. Parents watching a daughter step into the next chapter of her life with faith as her foundation. A community showing up to bear witness to all of it.
When families get that right, it shows in the room and it shows in every photograph. If you are planning a Christian quinceañera and you want a photographer who actually understands what this day is about — reach out. I would love to be part of it.

Quinceañera Photography Tips
Quinceañera Photography Tips
What I Tell Every Quinceañera Before We Start Shooting
Your session is going to be beautiful. But there are a few things I walk every quinceañera through before we even pick up the camera, because knowing these going in will make a bigger difference in your photos than almost anything else.
Hands and Face
Make Your Hands Work For You
This is the first thing I look at when I am directing a session. Your hands. They will make or break a photo and most people do not realize it until they see the results.
The goal is soft and bendy. Think of how a dancer holds her hands. Nothing rigid, nothing flat, nothing clenched. Let your fingers fall naturally with a slight curve to them, like they are barely holding the air. When you bring your hand to your face, keep it light. A single finger resting gently near your cheek or jaw, barely touching, not pressing. That single adjustment — soft hands, light touch — takes a photo from a pretty portrait to something that looks genuinely editorial. It creates elegance without trying to manufacture it.
The Mysterious Look
Over the Shoulder and Off Guard
Not every great photo is taken with you looking straight into the camera. Some of the most stunning quinceañera portraits I have ever shot came from a simple direction: turn slightly, look back over your shoulder, and give me nothing.
That last part is important. Not a big smile, not a forced expression. Give me mystery. Let your eyes be soft, your jaw relaxed, your lips just barely parted or gently closed. The slight turn of the body creates shape and dimension in the frame. The over-the-shoulder gaze creates story. And that off-guard, unbothered quality — like you were caught in a private moment — is what makes a photo feel like it belongs in a magazine instead of a school hallway. It is one of my favorite things to capture and it almost always produces something the family keeps forever.
Your Expression
Find Your Smile Before You Show Up
I am not asking for a big toothy grin in every single frame. What I am asking for is something real. And that means you need to know what your smile looks like before you ever step in front of my camera.
Practice in front of a mirror. A lot. Not to perform, but to get familiar with your own face. Find your soft smile, the one that is not a full laugh but is not completely neutral either. That quiet, confident expression that sits right in the middle is one of the most powerful things you can bring to a session. A lot of people are surprised by how much it elevates every single photo. You do not need to feel silly practicing. Every model, every actor, every person who does this professionally knows their angles and their expressions before the camera turns on. You should too.
Working Together
Talk to Your Photographer
This one might be the most important thing on this entire list. Photography is a team effort. I bring the camera, the eye, the direction, and years of experience. But I cannot read your mind. And I am not going to pretend that I can.
If you see a preview and something does not feel right, tell me. If a pose feels awkward or uncomfortable, say so. If there is a shot you have been dreaming about since you started planning this day, show me the reference and let me make it happen. The best sessions I have ever shot were the ones where the girl in front of me was not afraid to speak up. We moved together, adjusted together, and built something together that neither of us could have gotten to alone. That is how the best photos get made. Not by one person working on the other but by two people working toward the same thing. So please, talk to me. Tell me what you love. Tell me what you want to try. And I promise we will get there.
Moral Support
Bring Someone in Your Corner
This one is especially for my shy girls. And I say that with all the love in the world because I have worked with plenty of them and I know how nerve-wracking it can feel to stand in front of a camera and be the center of attention for a few hours.
Bring someone. Your mom, your best friend, your cousin, whoever it is that makes you feel like yourself the moment they walk into the room. Having that one person there who is fully in your corner, cheering for you, making you laugh, reminding you how beautiful you look — it changes everything about how a session feels. And when you feel good, the camera sees it. That genuine smile that comes out when your best friend says something only she would say? That is the one that ends up being your favorite photo. If you are booking with Tuff Labs, I also want you to know that you will never be on your own. Our team will be right there with you the whole time, hyping you up, making you feel comfortable, and doing whatever it takes to bring out the best version of you. But bringing your person? That extra layer of love and familiarity goes a long way, and I will never tell you no.

Ibedy's Art Cakes: You Would Know Her Work Anywhere
Vendor Recommendation
Ibedy's Art Cakes: You Would Know Her Work Anywhere
I have known Ibedy for about six or seven years now. And in that time I have watched her work show up at more events than I can count, always from behind my camera, always making my job easier without even trying.
But here is the thing I always tell people when her name comes up. Even if I had never met her, I would know her cakes. You can spot one from across the room. There is a signature to them, a level of detail and artistry that does not look like anyone else's work. It looks like hers. And if you had any doubt at all from just looking, the first bite would settle it completely.
That combination is rare. Beautiful cakes exist. Delicious cakes exist. Cakes that are both, made by someone who treats every single order as a piece of art she is putting her name on — that is something else entirely.
Her Story
Ibedy's story is one of the things I respect most about her. She is Ibette Hernandez, a pastry chef based right here in Bryant, Arkansas, and she did not start this business with a plan. She started it out of necessity. She found herself at home caring for her children, one of them dealing with a serious illness that needed her full attention. She started making and selling simple cakes once or twice a month just to be productive with her time. Then one day a customer asked for something custom. She took the challenge. And what she found when she sat down to do it was a talent she did not know she had.
She describes it as a gift from God. I believe her.
She went from that one custom order to hundreds of them, studying the craft, refining her technique, building something real with the support of her family and the trust of her community. In 2016 she made it official and opened Ibedy's Art Cake LLC in Bryant. Nearly a decade later her work is unmistakable, her reputation is bulletproof, and every cake she makes still looks like she poured everything she had into it.
As a photographer, I will tell you something directly. The cake matters. Not just because it tastes good, but because it lives in your photos forever. The detail on a wedding cake, the design on a quinceañera cake — those things show up in images and they either add to the story or they do not. Every time I have photographed an event with one of Ibedy's cakes on that table, it has added to the story. Every time without exception.
Your Event Deserves a Cake Worth Remembering
If you are planning a wedding, a quinceañera, a birthday, or any celebration where the cake deserves to be as beautiful as everything else around it, reach out to Ibedy. Tell her what you are envisioning. She will give you something better than you imagined.

Quién es Cazuelas Rivera?
Catering Recommendation
Why I Chose Cazuelas Rivera to Cater My Wedding
My wedding was not simple to plan when it came to food.
My family is Mexican. My wife Lydia's family is Filipino. My friends are from everywhere. Pakistani, Korean, American, all over the place. I looked at that guest list and I knew right away that I could not just pick any catering company and hope for the best. The food had to work for all of them. Not just be okay for all of them. Actually work. Actually mean something.
I first tried Cazuelas Rivera in 2023. I was photographing Sophie's quinceañera and at some point I walked past their setup and the smell stopped me completely. I grabbed a plate and tried a few things and that was it. I knew this was not just catering. This was real cooking.
I went for three things that night. The meatballs were rich, deeply seasoned, slow cooked — the kind that make you stop mid-conversation. The birria and quesabirrias were exactly what they are supposed to be. Tender meat, dark flavorful consommé, quesabirrias with that perfectly crisped exterior from cooking in the birria fat. The camarones showed range. Beautifully seasoned shrimp that held their own against everything else on the table. I left that event knowing I had eaten something special.
What I did not fully understand until later was the story behind the food.
Their Story
Cazuelas Rivera was founded by Lourdes Castro and Alejandro Rivera, both originally from Veracruz, Mexico. Alejandro is from Chocamán, a place he describes as known for its beautiful mountains and the warmth of its people. Lourdes is from Córdoba. They built this business far from home, in a country with a different language, different customs, and different food — and that distance is exactly what gave Cazuelas Rivera its soul.
The name comes from nostalgia. Alejandro has spoken about how as a child, visiting his grandmother, she always cooked in cazuelas de barro — traditional clay pots that have been at the center of Mexican kitchens for generations. That memory stayed with him. When they built their concept, they built it around that feeling. Around what it means to taste something that takes you straight back to your grandmother's kitchen no matter how far from home you are.
Lourdes describes it simply. The food at Cazuelas Rivera is tradition. It is a reflection of what she and Alejandro learned in their homes, the recipes passed down from their mothers and grandmothers. When she is cooking for an event she says she feels like she is cooking for her own family. For her husband. For her children. That is not a marketing line. That is the actual reason the food tastes the way it does.
They started small. A team member who was there from the beginning talks about watching them sell food from the porch of their house, feeding friends, coworkers, and family. Almost three years later they are catering weddings, quinceañeras, baptisms, and celebrations across Arkansas — and they still personally select every piece of fruit, every vegetable, every cut of meat themselves. Every single event.
What also stood out to me was how seriously they take the details beyond the food itself. Lourdes personally contacts every client before each event to ask about their colors, their theme, their vision. She then customizes the table setup to match. Every event gets something unique. Every table is put together with love and attention to the smallest detail because she treats each one as if it were her own celebration.
That is the part that told me everything I needed to know.
When my own wedding came around, the decision was simple. I had tasted the food. I knew the people behind it. I understood where it came from and why it tasted the way it did. And when I thought about a room full of Mexicans, Filipinos, Pakistanis, Koreans, and Americans all sitting down together to eat — I knew that food rooted in that kind of tradition, cooked with that kind of intention, was going to reach every single one of them.
It did.
One More Thing
Right after my wedding, Cazuelas Rivera put together a mini reel of the day from their own perspective and shared it. I did not ask for it. They just did it. That was honestly one of the most amazing things to receive after the wedding was over — seeing our day through their eyes, the food, the people, the energy of the whole celebration captured by the people who were right there in the middle of it all feeding everyone. It showed me that to them, our wedding was not just another event on the calendar. It meant something to them too. And that is something I will never forget.
If You Are Planning an Event
If you want the food at your wedding, your quinceañera, or your next celebration to actually mean something to your guests — reach out to Cazuelas Rivera. Find them on Facebook and tell them what you are working on. The food will do the rest.

5 Reasons to book with Dane Events
5 reasons to hire a decor company for your wedding and why you should choose Dane Events.
Wedding Vendor Recommendation
5 Reasons I Hired Dane Events for My Wedding and Why I Recommend Them to Every Couple I Photograph
I want to be upfront about something before I even get into this post. Dane Events are not just a vendor I recommend. They are friends. People I have known for close to ten years, people who were there during some of the most important seasons of my career, and people who I genuinely trust with the moments that matter most. So when it came time to plan my own wedding, there was no list of vendors to compare, no back and forth, no research needed. I already knew who I was calling. Here is why.
Friendship and Trust
They Have Been in My Corner for a Long Time and the Trust Goes Both Ways
Long before I hired Dane Events for my own wedding, I was watching them work. From early on in my photography career, I was showing up to events they had decorated, pointing my camera at rooms they had transformed, and walking away with some of my best work because the spaces they create give a photographer something real to work with. Over the years, as my business grew and my client base expanded, Dane Events was part of that journey. They believed in what I was building before it was fully built. And that trust has always gone both ways. When it came time for their own wedding day, they called me to be their photographer. That means everything to me. When someone who has seen dozens of photographers at work chooses you to capture the most important day of their life, that is not a business decision. That is friendship. Having them at my own wedding was the same. We have shown up for each other, and that is a relationship I do not take lightly.
Stress Free Experience
They Handle Everything So You Can Actually Enjoy Your Wedding
Wedding planning is a lot. Anyone who tells you otherwise has either never planned one or has already blocked it out. One of the best decisions we made for our own wedding was handing the decor entirely over to Dane Events and trusting them completely. The furniture, the linens, the centerpieces, the ceiling treatments, the lighting. All of it was theirs to manage, and not once did I have to chase them down or worry about whether things would come together. They handle every detail from start to finish so that on the day itself, you are not a coordinator. You are a couple getting married. That kind of stress free experience is worth more than any single decor piece they bring through the door.
Photography and Decor
Great Decor Makes Great Wedding Photos
I am going to say something that I genuinely believe as a photographer who has shot hundreds of weddings. The room matters. A beautifully decorated venue does not just look good to the eye. It transforms what shows up in the camera. The way Dane Events works with lighting, layered textures, intentional color, and thoughtful placement means that every corner of the room is a photograph waiting to happen. Every wedding I have photographed where Dane Events handled the decor, I have come back with images I am proud of. It is not a coincidence. It is the direct result of working with people who understand that every detail contributes to the final picture. Literally.
Vision and Design
They Turn Your Vision Into Something Even Better Than You Imagined
We came to the Dane Events team with our colors, our ideas, our inspiration, and our vision of what we wanted our wedding day to feel like. What they gave us back was all of that and then some. They have an ability to take what is in your head and translate it into a physical space in a way that feels effortless on your end, even though the work behind it is anything but. The details, the cohesion, the way everything flowed together. It exceeded what we had pictured. That is the mark of people who genuinely care about getting it right, not just getting it done.
Consistency and Quality
They Have Never Let Me Down. Not Once.
In close to ten years of watching Dane Events work across venues all over Central Arkansas, I have never seen them miss. Different rooms, different scales, different styles, different budgets. The quality stays the same every single time. That consistency is something I look for in anyone I refer my clients to, because when I put my name behind a recommendation, I need to know that the people I am sending you to are going to show up for you the same way they have shown up for me. Dane Events always has. Every time, without exception.
Your Wedding Day Deserves This
If you are planning your wedding and still figuring out your decor, do yourself a favor and reach out to the Dane Events team. One look at their work and you will understand exactly what I mean.
